Art Competition Winners

Our joint winners in the Art Competition received their prizes today on board the Sir Peter Blake Art Bus.

Ollie Keller and Catriona Holden impressed the judges with their inspired designs for a Book Festival brochure.

Congratulations to them both – definitely two young talents to keep an eye on!

Bookfest Weekend is now upon us. We can’t wait for all the exciting events that we have lined up over the next two days.

Even if you haven’t pre-booked there are still lots of talks and workshops which you can get tickets for on the day – see the Events page for current availability. Why not tell your friends and family to come along as well?

See you tomorrow!

Garden Storytimes

Summer is here, the weather forecast is promising – so it must be time for Garden Storytimes!

We are very grateful to the three Linton families that have opened up their beautiful gardens for these events.

On Tuesday 4th May we will be listening to Wind in the Willows at Springfield House in Horn Lane. On Wednesday 5 May, we move to the Guildhall in Church Lane to be transported “Up the Beanstalk”.  And on Thursday 6th May we be at 3 Mill Lane for some Cat Poems and Stories.

Gardens open at 3.45pm and stories begin at 4pm. We suggest you bring a rug to sit on. Refreshments will be available on arrival.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Bookfest starts tomorrow!

The 2010 Festival kicks off at midday tomorrow with our Children’s History Walk.

We will be meeting at Palmers Close opposite Symonds House to retrace the route of a Victorian Workhouse Outing to the seaside on the Stour Valley Railway line.

The weather forecast is now slightly more encouraging – so we are all looking forward to a memorable trip down memory lane.

There is no need to pre-book, so just come along and join in the fun. You never know, you might learn something!

See you there!

A Victorian Workhouse Outing

We have fond memories of the History Walk at the 2008 Festival when we recreated the Battle of Linton which took place during the English Civil War. It’s not often you bump into a Roundhead and Cavalier in Linton High Street!

We were wondering about what theme we could use for a History Walk this year when we came across a fascinating book entitled Victorian Country Children by Sallie Purkiss in the (excellent!) Linton Library.

Sarah Townsend, one of the real-life children featured in the book, was raised in the Victorian Workhouse in Linton. Life was hard for Sarah and her family, but the chapter ends with a description of a special treat for the Workhouse children – a day’s outing to the seaside in the summer of 1873.

We have decided to follow the route of the children from the Workhouse to the Railway Station in Station Road – reliving the sights and sounds of Victorian Linton.

Meet at Palmers Close at 12am on Saturday 1st May. Duration c. 1 hour. Please bring a responsible adult. Why not dress up as a Victorian child to really get in character!

Shiny, Happy People

We are delighted to welcome new author Kate Slater to our Festival on Saturday 8th May.

Kate has recently finished her book – Magpie’s Treasure. The story is about Magnus Magpie – a bird with an eye for burglary -  and is illustrated by wonderfully intricate collages.

Magnus steals only the brightest, shiniest, most dazzling things and stashes them secretly in a hollow at the top of his tree. But do all these riches make him happy? It takes a trip to the moon for Magnus to discover that all that glitters is not gold and that true happiness can often be found at home.

Kate will host a drop-in collage-making workshop for us on Saturday afternoon.  Come along and make your own Magpie’s Nest!

This talk could save your life…

Calling all budding Indiana Jones’s and Lara Crofts!

Simon Chapman - real life explorer and author- is coming to Linton to show you how to survive some of the toughest environments on the planet.

Author of the hugely successful Explorers Wanted series and winner of the 2006 Blue Peter Children’s Books Award for Best Book with Facts, Simon has recently branched into fiction with three titles for Barrington Stoke.

A huge hit at the 2006 Festival, Simon has many more hair-raising stories to relate to us, including his 2008 expedition down the Amazon in the footsteps of the legendary 16th century Spanish explorer Juan Alvarez Maldonado…
